3D pop art

Description: Students worked in pairs and randomly selected slips of paper that assigned them a location and two objects. Using these prompts, partners collaborated to draw and color a scene that included the given location and objects. After completing the drawing, students used construction paper to carefully cut, fold, and attach parts of their artwork so the objects would pop out from the background.

Extension Activity:  Students will write a short reflection describing how they worked together as partners and how they decided what parts of the artwork should pop out. They will also describe the artwork they have made together as a class. Then the students will write an exit ticket explain what makes something pop out or look 3D?

Pottery Square

Description: Students created a square pottery piece using clay. First, students shaped and smoothed their square base. Using the remaining clay, students added three raised or carved designs on top of the piece. Each design represented something meaningful about the student, such as a hobby, interest, symbol, or personal trait. Students learned basic clay techniques, including shaping, attaching, and scoring and slipping, while exploring how texture, shape, and form can be used to express personal identity through pottery.

Extension Activity: Students will write a short statement explaining the meaning behind each of their three designs. Students then will write a passage to compare how working with clay is different from drawing or painting.

Print making ornaments

Description: Students participated in a printmaking activity where they worked in pairs to design and create a stamp using Styrofoam. Each pair chose an image that represented something important to them, such as a favorite object, symbol, or a family tradition. Students carefully drew and pressed their design into the Styrofoam to create a stamp. Using paint, each pair stamped their design four times onto construction paper, arranging the prints to resemble ornaments. This activity introduced students to the printmaking process while encouraging collaboration and personal expression through art.

Extension Activity: Students will reflect on their printmaking project by identifying elements of design used in their ornament prints, such as shape, line, and color. As an extension, students may experiment with using different colors or patterns for each stamped ornament. Students may also write a short reflection explaining the meaning behind their design and how working with a partner helped them create their artwork.

Snowflake Salt

Description: Students created a winter themed art project using three paper snowflakes. First, students cut out snowflake shapes and arranged them on a sheet of paper. The snowflakes were then glued onto the paper. Next students created glue designs on the snowflakes followed by sprinkling salt over the glue. Once the glue and salt were set, students used watercolor paint to add color, allowing the paint to spread and blend through the salt. This process helped students explore texture, shape, and color while observing how materials react together to create a snowy, icy effect.

Extension Activity: Students will explain how the salt changed the way the watercolor paint looked.  then write a short reflection connecting their artwork to winter weather and how snowflakes are unique.

Turkey Painting

Description: Students created a turkey artwork using masking tape and paint. First, students used masking tape to divide the paper into sections, forming the turkey’s feathers and background. They then painted each section. After the paint dried, the tape was removed to reveal clean lines and shapes. Students added details to the turkey, such as eyes and a beak, using paint.

Extension Activity: Students will explain how the masking tape helped create clear shapes and lines. Students will write a short reflection about what surprised them when the tape was removed, did they expect what their turkey looked like?
