Pumpkin

Description: Students created a decorative pumpkin artwork by first drawing a pumpkin divided into sections. Inside each section, students added fun designs and patterns they enjoyed, such as lines, shapes, and symbols. The drawings were completed using crayons, then finished with watercolor paint, allowing students to observe how crayon resists watercolor.

Extension Activity: Students will identify at least three elements of design used in their pumpkin artwork and explain which section is their favorite and why. Students will also compare how the crayon and watercolor worked together in their artwork, and explain what happened when they added the watercolor to their pumpkin.

Hidden Safari

Description: Students participated in a Hidden Safari art activity that combines drawing, color, and visual perception. First, Students will create their own red lens “glasses” to reveal the hidden drawings. Students then drew safari animals or objects using a red-colored medium. Next, they layered colorful leaves, patterns, and lines over the drawing using other colors, carefully hiding the images underneath.  When viewed through the red lenses, the hidden safari images became visible, helping students explore how color and contrast affect what we see.

Extension Activity: Students will write a passage explaining how the red lens helps reveal the hidden image and why the animals were not easily seen without it. Then they will write a short reflection explaining how this activity explains the differences between warm and cool colors.

Van Gough Inspired

Description: Students explored the style of Vincent van Gogh by creating a mixed-media artwork using tissue paper and glue. After observing Van Gogh’s use of bold colors, movement, and expressive lines, students layered torn tissue paper onto paper using glue to create a vibrant, textured background. Once the glue dried, students added a black silhouette over the top to “black out” parts of the image, creating strong contrast and emphasizing shape and space. This process helped students understand how artists use color, texture, and contrast to create mood and visual interest.

Extension Activity: Students will analyze their artwork by identifying at least three elements of design used in their piece (such as color, texture, shape, or space). They will explain how the black silhouette changes the way the colors and textures are seen. Then will write short reflection connecting their artwork to Van Gogh’s expressive style and use of movement.

Dot Day

Description: After reading The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, students will create their own artwork inspired by the story’s message about creativity and confidence. Using paint and mixed materials, students began with a single dot made with a coffee filter and explored the Elements of Design by adding color, line, and texture with a white crayon. After adding all the white crayon students will watercolor the coffee filter and their secret image will show up.

Extension Activity: Students will reflect on their artwork by identifying at least three elements of design they used (such as color, line, shape, or texture). They will explain how starting with one dot helped them create a unique piece of art. Then will write a short sentence explaining how their artwork shows creativity and confidence inspired by The Dot.

Principles and Elements

Description: Students will learn about the different types of principles of elements then they will take a picture of 5 of the elements they can find with no repeating pictures. The pictures I chose fire hydrant: Color: How our eyes see light. In art creates different moods. Side walk: Emphasis: Creates dominance and focus in their work. Stop Sign: Shapes:  An area contained within an implied line. Two dimensions length and width. Grass: Texture: Surface quality of an item can be simulated or real. Spiderwebs: Lines: Path from a moving dot. Can show shapes and direction.

Extension Activity: Students write 3–5 sentences explaining: Which element was easiest to find? Which was hardest? Why these elements are important in art? Use art vocabulary (line, texture, space, etc.).
